Our Story
The Emissions Trading Association of India (ETAI) is established in response to India’s evolving climate commitments and the growing need for a credible, structured carbon market ecosystem. Recognising the country’s transition toward Net Zero and the development of the Carbon Market in India. ETAI is conceived as a dedicated platform to bridge policy, industry, and market expertise.
ETAI is focused on advancing market integrity, technical capacity, and institutional collaboration in emissions trading and climate finance. By aligning international best practices with India-specific regulatory and economic realities, we aim to support the design, implementation, and scaling of efficient carbon market mechanisms.
ETAI functions as a convener and knowledge hub, working with verifying agencies, registries, policymakers, industry stakeholders, researchers, and market participants to promote transparency, innovation, and equitable participation in both compliance and voluntary carbon markets across India.

The Emissions Trading Association of India (ETAI) is an independent, not-for-profit institution dedicated to strengthening the design and growth of high-integrity carbon markets in India. Established to support the national priorities by working towards climate transition, ETAI focuses on advancing emissions trading frameworks, climate justice, market transparency, and institutional capacity aligned with India’s Net Zero ambitions, Right to Development, Common But Differentiated esponsibilities with Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC).

Our Purpose & Context
India is at a critical juncture in its climate and energy transition, marked by its Net Zero 2070 commitment and the development of theVoluntary & Compliance Carbon Markets in India. The Emissions Trading Association of India (ETAI) is established to support this national vision by functioning as a centre of excellence for carbon market development, ensuring climate justice, integrating global best practices with solutions tailored to India’s regulatory, economic, and sectoral realities.
As a platform, ETAI convenes stakeholders across compliance and voluntary carbon markets—including verifying agencies, registries, policymakers, industry, financial institutions, and academia, to advance market integrity, transparency, and innovation. Through this role, ETAI aims to foster an inclusive and high-integrity carbon market ecosystem that enables equitable participation and instill principle of Common But Differentiated Responsibilities with Respective Capabilities (CBDR - RC) across sectors, regions, and enterprises, including MSMEs, while strengthening India’s transition to a low-carbon economy & ensuring Right to Development.

At the Emissions Trading Association of India (ETAI), our work is anchored in advancing the design, integrity, and effective functioning of emissions trading and carbon market mechanisms in India. We facilitate high-level dialogues and technical engagements that bring together policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, financial institutions, and academia to support the evolution of a robust Carbon Market in India.
ETAI develops context-specific guidance on market integrity, MRV systems, and carbon accounting, while providing technical assistance and capacity-building for covered entities, verifiers, and market participants. Through flagship knowledge initiatives such as the Annual India Carbon Market Report, Technical assistance and the Carbon Market Thought Leadership programs, we provide market intelligence, foster international alignment, and strengthen institutional readiness for a transparent, efficient, and globally credible emissions trading ecosystem in India.
